Understanding sewing needle sizes
In 80/12, both numbers describe the same needle thickness: 80 is the metric size and 12 is the US equivalent. Smaller numbers generally suit finer fabric and thread; larger needles can handle denser or heavier layers. Match the point type to woven, knit or coated fabric as well as checking thread thickness and seam bulk.
The ranges are starting points for ordinary seams, not limits for every project. Choose an available size in the appropriate needle type; not every maker supplies every size. Thick hems, heavy topstitching thread or tough materials may need a different setup approved for your machine.
A Topstitch needle has more room in its eye for suitable thicker thread used in visible stitching. A Twin needle has two needles on one shank for parallel rows, often used on hems. Choose points to suit the fabric and follow the manual for twin-needle compatibility, threading, spacing, foot and stitch settings. Check clearance by hand as instructed before using the pedal.
