Hooping & Registration

Hoop marks / hoop burn

Check the symptom, then work through the fixes in order.

What you may see

  • A visible ring, shine, flattened pile or pressure mark remains after the item is removed from the hoop.
  • Delicate coatings or fabric surfaces may be permanently scuffed.

Likely causes

  • The hoop was tightened more than necessary.
  • The material is pressure-sensitive, coated or has a raised pile.
  • The item remained hooped for a long period.
  • The hoop trapped a seam, fastener or uneven thickness.

Try this

  1. 1Remove the item from the hoop promptly after stitching.
  2. 2For washable fabric, gently dampen or launder according to its care instructions.
  3. 3Lift suitable pile lightly with steam from a safe distance without pressing it flat.
  4. 4Test any recovery method on an inconspicuous area first.
  5. 5Float or use a less-marking hooping method for the next attempt.

Prevention tips

  • Test hoop pressure on a scrap or hidden area.
  • Float velvet, leather, vinyl and other mark-prone materials when appropriate.
  • Use only enough hoop tension to hold the stabilised item securely.
