Upper thread breaks

Check the symptom, then work through the fixes in order.

What you may see

  • The upper embroidery thread snaps repeatedly during stitching.
  • Breaks may happen at the same design area or appear random.

Likely causes

  • The needle is dull, bent, damaged or the wrong size for the thread.
  • The machine is threaded incorrectly or upper tension is excessive.
  • Old, damaged or poor-quality thread is catching on the spool or cap.
  • A burr exists somewhere in the accessible thread path, needle plate or hook area.
  • The design is too dense, stitches are too short or the machine speed is too high.

Try this

  1. 1Replace the needle with a fresh, correctly inserted embroidery needle.
  2. 2Rethread the upper thread completely and check that the spool unwinds without catching.
  3. 3Try a known-good embroidery thread and a suitable spool cap or thread stand.
  4. 4Inspect accessible guides, the needle plate and bobbin case for obvious rough spots without disassembling the machine.
  5. 5Reduce embroidery speed and test the same section on scrap fabric.
  6. 6Review design density and very short stitches if breaks repeat in exactly the same place.
  7. 7Seek professional service if breaks continue across different threads, needles and designs.

Prevention tips

  • Store embroidery thread away from heat, dust and direct sunlight.
  • Change needles regularly and after any needle strike.
  • Use sensible speed and density for the thread and material.
