Thread & Tension

Thread shredding or fraying

Check the symptom, then work through the fixes in order.

What you may see

  • The upper thread becomes fuzzy, separates into strands or wears through near the needle.
  • Small fibres may collect around the needle eye before the thread finally breaks.

Likely causes

  • The needle eye is too small or the needle type does not suit the thread.
  • The needle is damaged, inserted incorrectly or has been used too long.
  • Upper tension is excessive or the thread is rubbing on a guide or spool cap.
  • A rough edge on the needle plate or another accessible thread-path part is abrading the thread.
  • Dense stitching or high speed is creating excess friction.

Try this

  1. 1Replace the needle and confirm it is fully and correctly inserted.
  2. 2Choose a needle with an eye large enough for the thread weight.
  3. 3Rethread the machine and make sure the spool unwinds freely.
  4. 4Reduce the embroidery speed and test again.
  5. 5Inspect accessible thread guides and the needle plate for a burr; stop using a damaged part.
  6. 6Review density or thread choice if shredding repeats at the same design section.

Prevention tips

  • Match needle size and eye style to the embroidery thread.
  • Use fresh needles and discard any needle involved in a strike.
  • Keep thread feeding smoothly without rubbing a poorly fitting spool cap.
